The creation of any computer software has a design that had a conclusion. Our software design was guided by our vision that people with disabilities, specifically vision impaired, could [and should] be able to share in use of the Internet easily.
The KISS principal [Keep It Simple, Stupid!] was, and will remain, the main focus of the Application. But even with the KISS principal, there is need for this portion of the WeMedia Talking Browser.
That being said, lets take a look at how we have designed what are called default settings in the program. Default in computer talk simply means that we think we know what you want to do when you are using the program and have set it up based on these thoughts.
An example would be that if you were going to open a word processor Application, it would be a safe bet that you wanted to write a letter or something else and that at the end of writing the letter you would want to print out the letter. So the default settings would be that when you started the word processor Application you would want a fresh sheet of paper [in this case that would be a new file] in the window. You would also expect to have the focus [we’ll get into that later] at the top of the page so that you could immediately start typing the letter.
After you had typed the letter, it is a safe bet [again] that you would want to have it printed out. When you "told" the Application to print your letter, the program would use common, or default, margins; page orientation [usually portrait]; and paper size [again usually 8 ½ inches wide by 11 inches tall] The end result is that you will have started "writing" your letter immediately when you opened the program and when you had the program print it out, it would be perfect without you having to do anything special!
Okay, so what does that have to do with WeMedia Talking Browser you may ask? Well we have tried to do the same thing with our default settings. We have looked into our crystal ball and saw you opening our Application to surf the web. Pretty ingenious of us, eh? When the Application opens, we have a search engine site load [programmer talk that means we have told the browser to send a signal, the signal is what is called a GET command] to a server for the search page. When this search engine page is loaded in the browser, the Focus [Think of Focus this way. If your hand is touching a doorknob and your brain tells your hand to grab, turn, and pull what is in your hand to the left, the result will be that the door will be opened!] Your computer almost always has focus on something and when you press the enter key you have told the computer to execute that command = you type in the word CAT to find web pages containing the word CAT. Then you press enter. You have just told the search engine to finish the process.
The search engine receives your command [when you pressed enter] which basically says [or commands] the Search Engine to..
1. search and find as many web pages as you can containing the word CAT..
2. Return the results of your search back to me in a page.
Include the Internet addresses [This is so I can go there if I want]..
Include a brief description of what the pages are about and a count of the number of pages you found"..
When this process has been completed, you will have a results page in the browser with what you wanted from the search just performed per your Search.
